Why does one building have 20 smoke vents and another 30?
The number of devices is not determined by building size alone. The complete fire safety concept is decisive.
No, the number of devices is not determined solely by the size of the building.
Two halls may have similar dimensions yet require a completely different number of smoke and heat exhaust ventilators.
The design depends on several factors, including:
- the building’s fire load,
- fire compartmentation,
- building height,
- the required aerodynamic free area Aa,
- fire safety engineering requirements,
- applicable national fire safety regulations.
The required number of devices must therefore always be determined individually according to the building’s specific fire safety concept, operating conditions, and the technical requirements applicable in the country where the system is installed.
These devices are not intended to extinguish a fire. Their primary function is to remove smoke and heat, support the safe evacuation of occupants, improve visibility and tenability conditions within the building, and facilitate firefighting operations.
Consequently, two buildings that appear very similar may require significantly different numbers of smoke and heat exhaust ventilators on their roofs.

Fire safety is not about assumptions
Verified parameters, classifications, and performance according to EN 12101-2 are what matter.
Fire safety is not about assumptions, but about numbers.
At iPIC solutions, we do not deliver just devices. We deliver verified performance defined by EN 12101-2.
For designers and fire safety engineers, the key parameters include:
- Aa — aerodynamic free area, which determines the real efficiency of smoke extraction,
- Re 1000 / 10,000 classification, which expresses the reliability of opening in critical situations,
- SL and WL resistance, designed for real snow and wind loads.
In a project, it is a technical element. In reality, it is a system that must work immediately when it matters most.
